When it comes to describing the TV series that defined the 2000s, there is one show that will be mentioned by everyone and that show is ‘Lost’.

In the history of television there has been very few shows that have captures audiences around the world. Since it began in 2004, ‘Lost’ has been one of the most discussed TV shows ever to grace the silver screens. Forums, newsletters, websites, fan pages, social networking discussions and millions of status updates and tweets have followed the show’s six year run, with the audience trying to guess exactly what is going on. When producer J.J. Abrams and his creative team of Jeffrey Lieber and Damon Lindelof announced that they had a plan and knew how the series was going to end, the final season became they must watch series of 2010 but were all of the questions posed by the writers over the seasons going to be answered.

Season six continues on from Juliet detonating the hydrogen bomb and the repercussions of that explosion for people still on the island. This also introduced a new element to the stalwart storytelling techniques of the series, the flashbacks. This season however, introduced the flash-sideways, as the explosion seemed to have opened a parallel timeline were the Oceanic Fight 815 actually landed safely in Los Angeles and the island never existed. In these we discover how all of the key characters lives continued. So here we find out, what happed to the arrested Kate, Hurley returning to his millions, discovering that Sawyer is actually a cop, Jack has a son and is married, Claire discovers she has a brother, Jin and Sun discover that she is pregnant and John has to come to terms with his life and move on with his life in a wheelchair.

While we see the passenger’s lives unfold in Los Angeles, the story on the Island continues and here is were all the revelations we have been waiting to be answered with finally, for the most part, be revealed. With Jacob dead, the candidates he has gathered to take on his duty to the Island are running out of time to save the people, the island and themselves from whatever has taken the form of John Locke. The mysterious dark inhabitant has split the inhabitants into two groups and is determined to achieve something that he has never been allowed to do, leave the island. It is up to Hurley and Jack to discover a way to contain him but when a plane crash-lands on the island and an old enemy arrives, Locke and his followers become more dangerous than ever.

Every ‘Lost’ fan who have been watching or even studying the programme since it started in 2004 knew this is the final season, the one were the answers would finally come and everything would be explained. With promise from the always-excellent cast and show runner Damon Lindelof and his creative team that the fans and viewers are heading towards something special, the final episode ‘The End’ was greeted with a mixed reaction from both hard care viewer and critic alike. Through the duration of the final season you will discover what the island actually is and why it is so important for the forces of good and evil. You will discover the connection between Jack, Kate, Swayer, Hurley and the rest of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 and how their destinies have intertwined on this island but there will be a lot of frustration also. The lack of information on overall intentions of DHARMA Initiative, including why the polar bears were there, is frustrating, the voices in the forest are never explained, why many of the surviving passengers have seen dead people or unusual animals or events like Jack and his father and Kate and the Black Horse, the list goes on and on. While it can be argued that many of these questions would have taken another season to answer, the execution of the finale was filled with highs and lows.

The final season of ‘Lost’ is all about answering the questions “What is the series all about?” The creative team behind the show did offer many answers that satisfied the viewer’s investment over the six seasons of the show but the final reveal is what met with the most controversy and the negative reaction from the fans. Constantly denying that this plot device would be used, the reveal as to what the flash-sideways were came as a major disappointment, distracting from was an excellent conclusion to the events on the island. Raising a groan from the dedicated audience must not been Lindelof and the rest of the team’s goal but that is what they received. ‘Lost’ is still, rightly regarded as a televisual event and one that will be remembered for a very long time but you will wish they ended it a little better.
