There has been many a TV show that deals with lawyers but ‘Damages’ has something different that makes it standout from the rest, edge of your seat twists and turns.

Series about the American legal system have always been a stalwart of the US broadcasting with many becoming popular and cult hits. Each week the crack legal team defend or prosecute a case before moving onto the next episode and another case. ‘Damages’ is different however. Taking a leaf out of the hit but short-lived 90s show ‘Murder One’, ‘Damages’ deals with one case per season, with continuing plot threads that were introduced during the first series but this is shot in the conventional way.

What makes ‘Damages’ different is its use of timelines. As it did in the first season, the programme teases you by jumping into the future and revealing where the overall story for the season is going and then you have to figure out how the characters are going to get to that point. The show also jumps backwards in time, to reveal background on a character or key moment that set events in motion. It is this aspect that makes ‘Damages’ standout from many of the other legal bases shows.

After the Frobisher case dominated the first season we return to see Ellen Parsons returning to work for Patty Hewes to use the firm resources to pursue Arthur Frobisher for the murder of her fiancé David. A new case comes to the firm’s attention when Patty’s old friend Daniel Purcell rings her out of the blue after been arrested for the murder of his wife. He claims his innocence and accuses energy company UNR of setting him up to keep him quiet about dangerous chemical spills caused by the company. Pledging to defend her friend, Patty also starts an investigation into UNR for the possibility of bringing a civil case to court. Unbeknownst to Patty however, Ellen is working with the FBI to bring her down after she tried to have her killed during the Frobisher case. With the trademark jumps in time that show Ellen shooting someone in a hotel room, the tension is just as high as it was in the first season.

What also makes ‘Damages’ a cut above many other programmes is the cast. With more established movie stars willing to commit to television, ‘Damages’ has gathered together a cavalcade of star names. Joining the main stars, the remarkable Glenn Close as Patty Hewes and Rose Byrne as Ellen Parsons are three big Hollywood stars. Oscar winner William Hurt plays Daniel Purcell, the man who as a past with Patty and is accused of murder. Marcia Gay Harden, a fellow golden statue owner, plays DNR lawyer Claire Maddox. No stranger to TV after making his name on the brilliant ‘Deadwood’, Timothy Olyphant plays Wes Krulik, the new man in Ellen’s life. We also see Ted Danson return as Arthur Frobisher and Tate Donovan returns as Patty Hewes legal partner Tom Shayes. This excellent cast bring the tightly written scripts to life, drawing you in from the off and make you clamber for the next episode.

‘Damages: Season Two’ continues the momentum of the first season. While it might not have the same impact, as you know the formula, the constant twists and turns of the script and the exceptional cast, ‘Damages’ is one of the best legal drama to grace the silver screen in a long time.
