The Big Apple has crimes to solve again and it is up to Mac Taylor and his team to bring the perpetrators to justice but can the third CSI series distinguish itself from the other two?

The worldwide success of the CSI franchise has meant that two spin off series came thick and fast. The Miami version took the approach of upping the action quota and the original Las Vegas set show concentrated on the crimes but the third show was the first to be set in a metropolis, a major city with a different level of crimes.

While this show again concentrates more on the crime than the action, 'CSI: NY' is slowly becoming its own show. The comparisons between this and its sister shows are very apparent but the show makers have decided to reveal more about the CSIs personal lives and feelings but with mixed results.

This season sees Stella Bonasera (Melina Kanakaredes) suffer from a major health scare, Lindsay Monroe (Anna Belknap) has to face up to her past as well as her feels for Danny Messer (Carmine Giovinazzo) and Mac Taylor has to cope with his own relationship with the new medical examiner, Dr. Peyton Driscoll (Claire Forlani). All of these storylines are given little time compared to crimes, but CSI shows have never really evolved any of the characters.

The third season of 'CSI: NY' continues to allow the franchise to grow. While it might not be as established as the original show or have the action of Miami, 'CSI: NY' is slowly becoming just as watchable as the other show. It just needs to find a place for itself within the franchise and stick with it to make the show standout.

PICTURE & SOUND

Presented in Anamorphic Widescreen 16x9 with Dolby Digital 5.1, the series looks great.

BONUS FEATURES

The Body Farm (22.07 mins)
Hill Harper, who plays Dr. Sheldon Hawkes on CSI: NY, is taken around the FBI training facility known as 'The Body Farm'. Here homicide detectives and law enforcement officers from around the world have access to simulated crime scenes using real bodies to train and help with investigations. This is a fascinating featurette but not one for the squeamish as it shows decomposing real bodies and some of the gruesome crimes they had to recreate.

OVERALL

With only on extended featurette, the DVD treatment for 'CSI: NY Season Three: Part 2' is a little disappointing. The lack of any commentaries for the episodes, especially after previous seasons had these will come as a great disappointment to fans of the show. The documentary is very good however, but it doesn't make up for the lack of any other special features.
