Charge Of This Post
In the season finale Mac Taylor has a lot on his plate. He must come to grips with having let a marine die in Beirut in 1983. Also the team must stay one step ahead of a bomber.

The second season of the second CSI spin off show continues and is still trying to be different from Las Vegas and Miami.

'CSI: New York' is different to the two other show for one simple reason, it is set in New York. While Miami and Vegas are large cities, they are nothing compared to New York. The metropolis is actually a character in the show and one that is recognisable, intimidating and filled with possibilities for crime investigation. Some may argue that what made the CSI franchise different was the fact that the show wasn't set in the usual TV cities of New York or Los Angeles but having a show set in the Big Apple gives the people behind the show the chance explore one of the most recognisable cities in the world.

As well as the big city setting, the show also has a slightly different feel to the other two shows. Like CSI: Miami, these are fully trained police officers and not just scientist, so we see them out on the New York streets arresting the bad guy as well as processing the evidence. Whereas Las Vegas is more about the science and Miami is all about action, New York is a mixture of the two and as the season have progressed the creative team behind the show have become more confident with this.

The first season didn't really know what to do with the show. They tried to make it a little edgier and darker but this didn't really stand the show in the best of lights. This has changed with the second season. Now with a refit of the lab, a lack of the dark blue filter that colourised the show and more character development has pushed CSI: NY in its own direction.

With Vanessa Ferlito leaving the show at the beginning of the season, Anna Belknap has come in Lindsay Monroe. Some may argue Vanessa Ferlito was far too attractive to be a CSI, her replacement is still good looking but a more believeable addition to the team. The character quickly embeds herself in the show and becomes an integral part of the team.

The final part of the second season sees the shows action quota with some great episodes. Hill Harper's Dr. Hawkes gets more screen time has he gets out of autopsy. The Tanglewood gang return for a dramatic storyline in 'Run Silent, Run Deep'. 'Heroes' sees the return of Aiden Burn for a case that will have repercussions for the entire team. The explosive season finale 'Charge of this Post', is the best example of were the shows wants to go and what makes it different from the other shows.

The second season of 'CSI: New York' sees the show grow and try and make itself the different one in the CSI franchise. The characters continue to grow but there is more development needed, even though we are now starting to learn some more about their lives outside of the lad. This is a step in the right direction and one that should make the show even better in the third season.

PICTURE & SOUND

OVERALL

The DVD package for the second season of CSI: NY is ok. The featurettes take you behind the scenes of the New York show, revealing how a CSI show is put together but the lack of commentary tracks will frustrate fans. With Momentum continue to split the season in half is also a mystery.
