"No one should die for me"

As Voldemort’s (Fiennes) power grows, the Dark Lord sends out his Death Eaters to take over the magical world as he focuses his energy on finding a way to kill Harry Potter (Radcliffe). Knowing he is in great danger, Mad-Eye Moody (Gleeson), Arthur Weasley (Williams) and Remus Lupin (Thewlis) come up with a plan keep Harry safe but as the Death Eaters close in, the boy who lives knows that it is only a matter of time before his friends will have to pay with their lives. Escaping with Ron (Grint) and Hermione (Watson), Harry sets out to continue what he started with Dumbledore (Gambon) and destroy the Horcruxes but he has to find them first.

After six magical films, the final chapter in the most successful film franchise of all time is here but can the first part of ‘The Deathly Hallows’ deliver a true Harry Potter adventure?

The decision to split the final novel of the ultra-successful Harry Potter franchise was one that was greeted with great contention by fans of the boy who lived. Many fans cried that it was Warner Bros. trying to squeeze as many dollars as it could out of their most lucrative franchise and the rest thinking the final chapter in this beloved series needed to be told in its entirety. The decision by Potter producer David Heyman, director David Yates and creator J.K. Rowling was the right one as it allows the final confrontation between the forces of good and evil to be built up to a suitable climax but before any of that could happen, Harry, Ron and Hermione would have to go on their darkest adventure yet.

Harry’s seventh adventure ‘The Death Hallows’ is a very different story than his previous adventures. Usually we see the boy wizard head to Hogwarts and spend the academic year struggling to overcome the latest devilish plot against him, his friends and School of Witchcraft and Wizardry by the Deatheaters and Lord Voldemort himself. After the tragic ending of ‘The Half Blood Prince’, the first part of the final adventure is all about keeping Harry safe from the rise of Evil within the wizarding world but that comes at a price. This is a very dark start to the story filled with fear, anger, betrayal and death with Harry having to come to terms with the fact that Voldermort will stop at nothing to kill him and that his friends will come into harms way to protect him. This makes for a more character driven story than ever before as Harry, Hermione and Ron go on the run to try and find the missing horcruxes but this comes at a price and it is one that will devastate fans.

Throughout the previous six films we have seen Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson grow up in the roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione. They have not only grown physically, of course, but they have also grown with their characters and grown into them. All of what they have learnt over the years about their characters and craft comes to bare in this film. This is Harry, Ron and Hermione at their most fragile and vulnerable, as their characters come to terms with what is going to happen. The trio are pushed to their acting limits, showing every emotion and coping with the demands of this much darker story with ease.

The trio would be nothing without their astonishing support. The Harry Potter series has always been a showcase for British talent and three more big hitters join the ranks of Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter, Timothy Spall, Jason Isaacs, Julie Walters, Michael Gambon, Brendan Gleeson, David Thewlis, John Hurt, Imelda Staunton, Robbie Coltrane and Ralph Fiennes. Bill Nighy, Peter Mullen and Rhys Ifans join the Potter family and each have a real impact on the first half of the final story. The young cast also return and it is Tom Felton’s Draco that gets the chance to shine again as he struggles to cope with what Voldermort is doing to him and his family.

‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1’ is a very different adventure for fans of the young wizard. With a much darker tale to tell and harrowing ending to the first half, it is a precursor to what is coming. This does not mean that the decision to split the story in two was wrong, far from it but prepare to be shouting ‘No!’ at the screen when it does come to an end. This is just the beginning of the end.
