As a police dog, Diggs (Marsden) caused so much trouble that he was taken off active service. Retired to the kennels, Diggs is shocked when the floor opens up in from of him and a dog called Butch (Nolte) makes him an offer he can’t refuse, to train as a Special Agent in the Dog secret service. His first mission is to track down Seamus (Williams) a pigeon with information on Kitty Galore (Midler), a cat with revenge on her mind against all of dog and human kind. As they locate Seamus, Diggs and Butch are intercepted by a cat called Catherine (Applegate), but after the inevitable battle between cats and dogs, they discover that they are working towards the same goal, stopping Kitty Galore.

When a movie is successful, Hollywood usually pushes a sequel into production straight away but nine years is a long time to wait for ‘Cats & Dogs’ fans.

In 2001 Warner Bros. released ‘Cats & Dogs’ and it went on to make over $200 million worldwide, so you would have thought that they would have followed up this success straight away. Instead in 2010, Warner decide to bring them back, even though the audience that enjoyed the film first time around are now nine years older. The original movie asked the audience to decide whether they would root for cats or dogs but making the dogs the good guys and the cats evil. Of course, this divided the audience with cat lovers not liking the fact that their feline friends were the bad guys but the film worked for a younger audience. The sequel tries to change that however.

The sequel takes us back into the world of international Dog espionage, with the canine’s protecting their best friends from the cat menace but not all the cats are evil this time. When new recruit Diggs joins the team to become a secret agent, a new threat to the world emerges in the shape of a hairless cat known only as Kitty Galore. With the devilish Kitty threatening the entire world, the Dog and Cat secret agencies have to team up to discover her plan and put a stop to it. This is, again, old-school James Bond secret agent stuff to appeal to the adults with all the gadgets and clichéd spy lines associated with the genre, unfortunately this is the aspect of the film that does not work.

This is a franchise made for the kids and should be viewed by the kids. Great family movies appeal to both parents and kids alike but ‘Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore’ is a film that really is just for the children and younger children at that. Director Brad Peyton and his team do try to appeal to a more grown up audience but the inclusion of many a nod to the James Bond movies and even the return of Mr. Tinkles as a Hannibal Lector character does little to appeal to the adults.

With a decent vocal cast having fun with their character voices, this is a movie that the kids will enjoy but the adults will really bemoan watching. There is not enough here to appeal to the older kids and adults watching but the sight of talking cats and dogs having an adventure will bring a smile to younger viewers. A Kids movie for Kids only.
