"EVE"

In the non-too distant future, humans have left the Earth after it became uninhabitable because of the huge amount of trash and rubbish we created. Left in their place to clear up the mess are thousands of robots but after seven hundred years only one is still functioning. His name is WALL-E and over the hundreds of years alone he has developed an emotion, curiosity. He finds everything that the humans have left behind fascinating and as he collects the things that captivate him, he longs to share everything that he has found. Unfortunately his only friend is a cockroach but when an alien ship lands on the planet and levels a robot behind, WALL-E thinks he has finally found someone to share everything with.

The release of a Pixar movie is an event in the annual cinematic calendar but can the latest from the animation giants keep up their extremely high standards?

The success story of the Pixar studios is unparalleled in movie history. Since 'Toy Story' smashed onto the big screen in 1995, the studio has enjoyed success after success with hits like 'A Bug's Life', 'Toy Story 2', 'Monsters, Inc', 'Finding Nemo', 'The Incredibles', 'Cars' and 'Ratatouille'. Their latest comes from the team behind the Oscar winning 'Finding Nemo', the studio biggest box office grossing smash, led by director/co-writer Andrew Stanton and this film could be their most accomplished yet.

The story to 'Wall-E' is science fiction and very reminiscent of many films in the genre that have come before. With nods to 'Silent Running', 'A.I.: Artificial Intelligence', 'E.T. The Extra Terrestrial' and even 'Short Circuit', 'Wall-E' is the story of the last functioning robot on Earth. His job is clean up the trillions of tons of waste, rubbish and garbage that have left the planet uninhabitable for life to exist. The problem is that the little robot has been doing this job for over seven hundred years and for most of that time he has been alone but this has seen him develop something outside of his programming, curiosity. You see Wall-E loves to find new things in the garbage left by the humans, and he has adored his residence with the trinkets and knick-knacks that he has found over the years. His most beloved treasure is his video of 'Hello Dolly' and this is the film that has taught him about human relationships and the one that drives him to meet someone who he can connect with. His dreams come true when out of the heavens lands a huge spaceship that leaves behind a beautiful robot called EVE. Has Wall-E finally found the companion he has longed for or does EVE's mission have huge consequences for the little robot?

The story might seem a little slight and similar but it is the execution that makes the movie so memorable. First and foremost, the character of Wall-E is simply adorable. This curiosity fuelled robot is a joy to behold, as he tries to understand the some of the items left behind by the vacating humans. It is his driving wish however that makes the character and the movie so special, as the little robot's main goal is just so heart warming, it will melt even the coldest heart. The character of EVE is also nicely realised. This completely modern robot, is technologically far superior to Wall-E but her advanced programming and Wall-E's seven hundred years of growth and programme development mean that the pair are a perfect match. Even though they are both robots, who for the most part don't even share much dialogue, they are set to become one of the most enduring romantic couples in screen history. The supporting characters, as you'd expect from a Pixar production, as also a lot of fun with Wall-E's only friend, a cockroach providing many of the laughs and when we finally do meet the humans, Pixar's lucky mascot John Ratzenberger steals the show as usual.

With animation levels pushed to new heights again and with a story that will touch even the darkest soul, 'Wall-E' is Pixar at their very best. The main character is just adorable and one that is destined to become a cinematic favourite for many years to come. If the robots of the future are going to be like this then everyone will be standing in line of their very own 'Wall-E'.
