"I am Iron Man"

While raising the ancient Kingdom of the Mandarin in China, James Rhodes (Saulsberry) faces attack after attack from rebels trying to stop it. As billionaire financier Tony Stark (Worden) flies to try and resolve the situation, he is kidnapped by the rebels and forced to build them a weapon that will sink the kingdom forever but Stark constructs a mechanical suit of iron to escape. When the city is raised however, the elemental guardians of Mandarin reawaken and prepare the world for the return of their master.

Marvel's animated feature-length adventures continue with an origin story for 'Iron Man' but should this movie have been made when the live action version is coming in 2008?

After the success on DVD of the two 'Avengers' movies, Marvel's animation arm turn their attentions to one of their most popular comic book characters, Iron Man. Last seen as one of the crime fighting super team, billionaire playboy and inventor Tony Stark's alter ego Iron Man receives his own film and strangely it is an origin story. While this might not seem strange when introdu

cing a new animated series, it is strange when a live action origin story arrives in 2008. This aside, Marvel animation continues to bring more of their characters directly to DVD. Utilising the same animated style as the 'Avengers' movies, 'The Invincible Iron Man' combines traditional 2D animation with computer-generated graphics to bring the superhero to life. Here we see the power of Stark's many Iron Man super suits as he goes to every extreme the Earth can offer, tracking down and fighting the elemental guardians as they locate the lost rings needed to resurrect the Mandarin.

The Element Guardian's are the perfect villains for an animated movie. With the powers of Earth, Wind, Fire and Water, these huge creatures would have been extremely expensive to create in live action, making the story of the Mandarin's resurrection the perfect showcase for what the animators can do. The subplot of Tony's relationship with his father is also a good touch for fans, explaining his motivations and drive in creating the Iron Man persona.

'The Invincible Iron Man' is a welcome addition to the Marvel Animation portfolio. While the decision to make this an origin story is a little strange when the live action version will cover this completely, this is still a good adventure and one that fans will enjoy.
