Bob

Conjoined twins Bob (Damon) and Walt (Kinnear) are local heroes in their small town in Martha's Vineyard. Bob is a sports star and Walt is a noted stage actor but their small time life is about to change forever. Walt has a dream of making it in Hollywood and as they both agreed at an early age that their situation would never hold them back, they move to LA.

Never afraid of using controversial subject matters in the pursuit of comedy, the Farrelly Brothers bring us another outrageous comedy but the problem is that it isn't outrageous enough.

As they did with Shallow Hal, they pick a minority to make fun of and then totally shy away from causing any offence. It's hard to believe that this movie is from the same people that brought us 'Dumb and Dumber' and 'There's something about Mary' because while this is funny in parts, it hasn't got the gross out, shock appeal of their more illustrious comedic efforts. What the Brothers have ended up producing is a sweet story about the bond between brothers, which could be just a metaphor about how they feel about each other.

The performances from the two leads are what make this movie very watchable however. While both Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear have dabbled in comedy before, this isn't the kind of movie you would expect either of them to be in but they rise to the occasion superbly. They are the heart of the movie and their onscreen relationship is very believeable. Greg Kinnear excels as the more confident Walt, the ladies man and actor of the pair. He has all the best lines and comebacks in the movie, showing again what a great actor he is whatever the role. Matt Damon is great as Bob, the straight guy to Kinnear's clown but he does have a lot of the physical comedy moments, which he makes his own.

The supporting cast is good but slightly underwritten and underused. Cher shows a real gift for comedy and she is not afraid to act up to her own media inspired persona. This shows a real sense of fun in the actress, as there are not many Hollywood divas that would mock themselves in this way. Eva Mendes continues to make a name for herself but while she may only be on screen to look beautiful, something that she excels at, she shows that she is quite adept at comedy. Seymour Cassell is also good as Walt's old school agent who uses the same bargaining techniques today as he used in the 1950s when he was a player. There are also numerous cameos from some big names for you to spot, all adding to the fun.

Stuck on You might not push the jokes as far as you'd want them to but it is still funny all the same. The Farrelly Brothers may have lost their controversial edge but is still provides quite a few good quality laughs and is worth going to see for the performances of Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear. Just don't expect anything too shocking.

PICTURE & SOUND

Presented in 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen with a choice between Dolby Digital 5.1 and dts surround soundtracks, this is an excellent transfer, as you'd except from a modern film. The picture quality is first rate throughout. The same can be said for the sound as it really emphasises the dialogue, which is important for a comedic movie. While it never really pushes the speakers to their limit, it is very good during the nightclub scene.

BONUS FEATURES

Commentary by directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly
Filled with loads of insights into the making of the movie and quite a few funny titbits, this might not be the commentary track you were expecting from the Farrelly's. It isn't laugh-a-minute stuff but it is informative. What you do gain from them is the fact that they know an awful lot about their films and everyone who started in them. They must name every extra that is in the movie, as most of them are either friends or family. There are some very funny moments, especially when they are talking about porn movie names, which makes this an enjoyable commentary.

Entitled "Walt & Bob get their photo taken", "Bob and May at the Drive-in", "Pavlou's Dong", "Bob wins at tennis", "Cher has a scoop", "Busted", "Table for one" and "Fishing", these eight deleted scenes don't really add much to the film but some of them are quite funny.
