In 1962, the Italian passenger liner Antonia Graza disappeared without a trace. 40 years later, the ship reappears in the Bering Straights and is discovered by Captain Sean Murphy's savage crew. Thinking they have struck gold, the crew prepare the liner to be towed back into port when they realise that they may not be the only ones on the ship.

When producer Joel Silver and director/producer Robert Zemekis set up Dark Castle pictures, people expected the reinvention of the Horror Movie but so far they have failed to deliver.

After The House on Haunted Hill and Thirteen Ghosts, I didn't expect much of Ghost Ship and I was right. A brilliantly gory opening sequence is followed by quite an interesting scene setter but then the movie dives into a predictable mix of special effects, poorly developed characters and large explosions.

You have to wonder why Julianna Margulies left ER and what Gabriel Byrne is doing with his career. Both of them should be looking for new agents. The rest of the cast are just there for you to place bets on who with die next and how predictably they will get it.

The film does have some plus points. The sets are very good, producing a very spooky atmosphere and the special effects are of a high standard, specially in the afore mentioned opening sequence. But looks do not a movie make.

Ghost Ship is a popcorn horror flick at its most basic. While watchable, it isn't one that is destined to stick in your memory for very long.
