Julia (Regan) was about to graduate from University with a Masters degree in Psychology when she gets a phone call from her childhood friend Billy (Abrahams). Meeting him in a back street diner, Billy tells her that they are coming for him and he can't take it anymore. When Julia asks who they are, he says that the night terrors that plagued their sleep as children have returned and are coming for them both.

Horror movies that make you rely more on your imagination rather than over the top special effects, for me, provide the better scare for your money, and They is one of those films.

Director Robert Harmon, best know for cult classic The Hitcher, builds the tension and provides the jumps in abundance, never relieving what you should be scared of. This is the best thing about the movie as the plot itself is just another reason to kill some young people but with the use of shadow and subtle lighting, this is a more frightening movie than it should have been.

The film's main problem, as with a lot of this type of horror, is that the reasons behind the attacks are never explained. Why are these 'Demons' taking adults and children and why are they afraid of the dark? Also the supernatural is never as scary as real life, this is why Hannibal Lecter is always voted the scariest villain in horror because he could really happen.

The performances are good however. Laura Ryan is slowly turning into the new scream queen by appearing in her second horror movie of 2002 and TV actors Marc Blucas (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Ethan Embry (Freaky Links) make the transition to the big screen with ease by giving good support to the ever-frightened Ryan.

Stylistically this movie has a lot going for it and it provides plenty of jumps and frights for your money. Just don't go in expecting any back-story or anything new.
