The Fowler's were a typical New England family. Matt (Wilkinson) was the local Doctor, Ruth (Spacek) taught Music at the local High School and their son Frank was about to go to College to study architecture. Things changed when Frank met Natalie (Tomei), a single mother who had recently separated from her husband. As they got closer Frank considered deferring his application for a year so he could spend more time with Natalie, but events took a turn for the worst when her jealous ex-husband found out about their relationship.

husband found out about their relationship. An emotional look into grief, this is a slow moving drama that loses itself in its own sense of despair and loss.

While the supporting performances from Sissy Spacek and Marisa Tomei, her best role in a very long time, are very good this is Tom Wilkinson's (The Full Monty) movie. His performance is absolutely superb. His American accent is flawless and the way he expresses his grief is both emotional and powerful. The whole film is just an extending acting lesson from an actor that deserves all the plaudits he has received.

What the movie lacks is any pace. The middle act seems to plod along showing the couple slowly drifting part until the inevitable explosion of emotion, but after nearly an hour of this you end up thinking 'just shout at each other for God's sake'. The ending however, is both shocking and emotional, making up for the lacklustre hour you have just had to sit through.

Worth watching for the wonderful Tom Wilkinson but don't expect a joyous, uplifting movie. It is dark, depressing and overlong but the ending makes up for all its shortcomings.
