London 1888, the district of Whitechapel is under the grip of a killer. While the rest of London seems uninterested in the brutal deaths of a few prostitutes, Inspector Abberline (Depp) thinks there might be more to the murder than everyone else think. The newspapers have given the killer a name that comes from the way he kills his victims, they call him Jack the Ripper.

Based on the graphic novel by the world famous comic book writer Alan Moore, this movie gives an answer to one of the best-known unsolved murder cases in history. The problem is that it does it too completely. Every question is answered about the case and no mystery or sense of conspiracy is left in your mind because of this. It takes away some of the impact of the story and most of the interest.

The performances are good however, especially from Depp and Holm and the overall look of the movie is fantastic, it really captures the essence of 19th Century London. It is the plot and the pacing of the movie that really lets it down. The movie really drags for the first hour before the revelations start to surface and then they all seem to come at a canter.

While the film itself is a good account of the Ripper story, it is not the ultimate version a lot of people were expecting. This is a real shame as the subject matter has always been something of British folklore and the movie doesn't really add to it, just offers it's own explanation of the events which in the end, is really nothing new.
