An American spy satellite self-destructs in orbit over Australia and its black box recorder, that holds a copy of every image it has ever taken, falls to earth and lands in the Northern Territories. A twelve-foot long crocodile that has been terrorising Aussie farmer Brozzie Drewett (Szubanski) swallows it and disappears back into the river. The CIA have to get hold of the recorder before anyone finds out what it contains but they didn't count on running into legendary conservationist Steve Irwin and his wife Terri, who have been asked by the local ranger, Sam Flynn (Wenham) to relocate the troublesome croc.

Nature loving madman Steve Irwin brings his unique no-holds barred look at the animal kingdom to the big screen. If you though Jackie Chan was the ultimate big screen risk taker, you haven't seen anything yet.

Irwin has such a passion and love of nature and the environment it has to be seen to be believed. Steve and his wife Terri wrestle crocodiles, capture snakes, study spiders and rescue orphaned kangaroos, all up close and personnel without the help of CGI or animatronics. Everything you see them do on the screen is real and you can't take your eyes off it. The man is a complete nutcase but his approach to conservation and the environment is very exciting to watch.

When Steve and Terri are on the screen you become totally captivated by their antics but this is where the movie's main problem emerges. The plot gets in the way of the action. I suppose without it the film would just have been an extended version of his TV show on the Discovery Channel, but it is very distracting and a little far-fetched.

This aside, Steve Irwin is unique and his extreme look at nature is both funny and informative. I've never seen a family movie that mixes education, action and humour. Crikey Mates, it's a beaut.
