Landon Carter (West) is the most popular guy in High School. A rebel who is always in trouble, the principle punishes him for his latest misdemeanour by making him take more of an interest in school activities. So, along with janitor duties and tutoring at the local junior high, Landon has to appear in the school play. Unable to learn his lines he turns to Jamie Sullivan (Moore), the school nerd and the daughter of the local minister, for help. As the two spend more time together, Jamie starts to bring out the softer side of Landon and Landon helps Jamie come out of her shell.

This movie starts off as the usual teen romance flick about the popular Jock who is reluctantly paired with school geek, who turns out to be beautiful young woman who changes his life around. After that the film then throws a huge dollop of sentimentality and emotion at you in the final act.

Shane West and singer turned actress Mandy Moore do their best with the material but the script is so full of sentimental hogwash by the end you start feeling a little sorry for them. I have to say that Mandy Moore is a better actress than she is a singer (Personal opinion) and even though she does sing twice in the movie, worst luck, her overall performance is quite promising for the future, if she can pick her projects better.

The soppy, overly romantic plot might appeal to twelve year-old girls who dream of been noticed by the most popular guy in school but for the rest of us this movie is like been force fed the fact that teenage romance is the most powerful and pure form of love. Or so the producers would like you to think.
