Jersey 1945, the war has just ended and Grace (Kidman) and her two children are trying to come to terms with the fact that Charles (Eccelston), husband and father to the family, was not coming back. Living in a large stately home, the family struggled with both the expense and the shear size of the property as the servants had mysteriously left, giving no notice. Along with this distress, Grace had to cope with the fact that both Anne (Mann) and Nicholas (Bentley) were very ill, they suffered from an allergic reaction to strong light making them house bound and made have to live in darkness. As new servants arrived, strange things started happening in the house and Anne has started talking about another family, who have told her the house is theirs.

This is an extremely well acted and marvellously written movie. Building tension throughout and twisting and turning through an exceptionally good plot, it gives you ideas on what you think is happening and then turns them complete on their heads. Nicole Kidman gives a stellar performance as the extremely Catholic mother, but it is the children that steal the show. Where are casting directors finding these extraordinarily talented youngsters? In Alakina Mann, who plays Ann, we have a very promising young child actress who could go as far as Haley Joel Osment.

No it isn't the fright fest you might have expected, it is only a 12, but it just oozes tension and suspense, making it a really great old-fashioned ghost story.
