Shrek (Myers) is a very private Ogre. He lives in his swamp, keeping himself to himself and the only time he interacts with anyone is to scare them off his land. This all changes when Lord Farquaad (Lithgow) exiles all the fairy tale creatures to Shrek’s swamp. Wanting to get back his beloved peace and quiet and much to the relief and joy of his new fellow swamp dwellers, Shrek says he will see Farquaad about getting everything back to normal. Joined by his new unwanted friend Donkey (Murphy), Shrek travels to the castle only to be crowded as the realm’s champion. He is then given the quest to rescue Princess Fiona (Diaz) from her Dragon protected prison and bring her back to marry the Lord, so he can be a King and in return the deeds to the swamp will be Shrek’s. Things don’t go as planned however, as Shrek starts to fall in love with Princess on the journey back home.

How can I sum up how I much I adore this movie in a few short paragraphs? Not in a long time I have ever come out of a cinema with a smile as big as the one I had after watching this film. It is family entertain personified. I have not seen a movie that has made me laugh this much in such along time. The whole movie is just a crescendo of quality gags. The humour hits on so many levels, from subtle digs at Disneyland to an outright mickey-take of all things Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen.

The brunt of most of the gags however, is it’s main competition, Disney. This is Jeffrey Katzenberg’s way of sticking two fingers up at his former employers, and he does it extremely well. The quality of the CGI is like nothing you have ever seen and the good news is that a marvellous script complements the exceptionally impressive visuals. The vocal talent is utilised to a tremendous degree to give the characters a real sense of personality, which is hardly ever found in a live action movie never mind an animated one. Eddie Murphy is the star of the show as Donkey; Shrek’s forever talking sidekick and it is his best performance in years.

This is up there with the Toy Story movies in showing how animated films should be made. It caters for every age group and is just a joy from start to finish. I defy anyone not to love this movie.
