In 1956, Deep Sea Diving was the hardest job in the Navy. For Carl Brashear (Gooding Jr.) this was made even harder by the fact that he was the first black trainee at the Us Navy dive school. Making his life a living hell was Master Chief Billy Sunday (De Niro), who was under express orders by the school commanding officer not to let Brashear pass.

This true story of Carl Brashear is powerfully told and masterfully acted by the two leads, but loses a lot of its credibility when you find out that Master Chief Sunday never actually existed and is an amalgamation of several different Master Chief's that Carl served under. Never the less this movie is still engaging and holds the interest as you see the what people had to wear underwater before Jacque Cousteau invented the aqualung in the late 1960's.
