The nine planets of the solar system are about to come into alignment for the first time in five thousand years. For a secret society called the Illuminatae, this is the time to harness the power of the light, a sacred metal triangle that gives the holder command of time itself. The Triangle however, has been split in two and the parts hidden at opposite ends of the Earth. To find the pieces of the triangle the group have to find an ancient clock that will point the way to their secret locations. The problem that society member Powell (Green) has is that the clock what was found by the late Lord Croft and is in the possession of his daughter, daredevil archaeologist Lara Croft (Jolie). She has made it her mission to finish her Father’s work and with the power of the light, get back the time her and Lord Croft have been cheated of.

This movie is a major disappointment. After first seeing the trailer at the beginning of the year the whole of the world and myself really wanted to see this movie, but then the US reviews started coming onto the Internet and the signs were not good. I’m very sorry to say this, but the movie is a frustrating missed opportunity. The script is absolutely dire, you feel like they came up with four or five really good action sequence ideas and then paid a Chimp to write the bits in between.

The action set pieces themselves are very entertaining, especially the one in Cambodia, but the climatic sequence is a major let down, ending the movie far too quickly.

It does have one saving grace however, that is the casting of Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. This is a character she was born to play and is everything you hoped Lara would be. She is tough, athletic, handy with a set of guns and extremely sexy. Not since Ellen Ripley in the Alien movies has a female character had such strong presence of the big screen. The facts that the script and the supporting cast are so dreadful and inconsequential ruin what could have been the new Indiana Jones for the twenty-first century.
