EVOLUTION

Starring: David Duchovny, Julianne Moore, Orlando Jones and Seann William Scott

Director: Ivan Reitman

Running time: 101 mins

When a meteorite crashes into the Arizona desert, community college professors Harry Block (Jones) and Ira Kane (Duchovny) set out to investigate the impact zone. Having impacted through the surface into a system of underground caves, the pair find the meteorite in a cavern and start to take some samples. When the rock starts to ooze a blue liquid, Harry and Ira take a sample back to the college to make the startling discovery that the liquid has evidence of primitive single cell life forms within it. Thinking they are going to win the Noble Prize for sure, their self-congratulations are abruptly stopped when they find out that a government task force led by Dr. Allison Reed (Moore) has taken over the site. While all of this has been happening the single celled creatures are changing, in fact they are evolving at an extremely accelerated rate.

Another summer blockbuster that is just pure entertainment, but is it the new Ghostbusters? Well the answer is no. While this movie is very entertaining in it’s own right, it is unfair to compare it with spooky-comedy classic. Yes it has the same director in Ivan Reitman and it is a comedic take on the Sci-Fi genre, but is has more in common with Men in Black and Galaxy Quest than Ghostbusters. The two things that it was really missing was a catchy theme tune from Ray Parker Jr. and a tagline as good as “Who ya gonna call?”

Comparison aside, this is a really entertaining movie in its own right, with a good cast, sharp witty dialogue and excellent special effects. The designers have really gone to town on the creature designs, putting bizarre twists into a parallel evolutionary cycle, creating everything from amazingly diverse insects and carnivorous amphibians to flying dragon-like dinosaurs.

Delivering action and gags at a break neck speed and the interaction between the four leads will keep you sniggering all the way through to the extremely explosive climax. While Ivan Reitman never quite gives us the new Ghostbusters for the new millennium everyone was wanting, what he does give us is an extremely good popcorn movie that everyone will enjoy.
