CHRISTMAS CAROL: THE MOVIE

Starring the vocal talents of: Simon Callow, Kate Winslet, Jane Horrocks, Rhys Ifans and Nicolas Cage

Director: Jimmy T. Murakami

Running Time: 81 mins

Certificate: U

It's Christmas Eve and old miser Ebenezer Scrooge (Callow) is visited by the ghost of his long dead partner Jacob Marley (Cage). Covered in chains representing all the hardship and woe he inflicted on others throughout his life, Marley tells Scrooge to change his ways or he will suffer the same fate. Thinking nothing of it Scrooge is visited by three ghosts who show him how his life has effected others.

Another version of the classic Charles Dickens Christmas fable is bought to the screen with the help of the National Lottery Film Fund and it makes you wonder way. This has to be some of the most appalling animation to grace the screen in many a year. In the age of the computer, the classic 2D style is loosing its grip. Just compare the box office takings of the 3D Shrek to the 2D Atlantis for example. With the exception of the Pokemon movies, 2D animation is having a really bad time, but when that animation is as poor as this, it just looks cheap.

The film makers gathered together a really good vocal cast but the problem is that is seems that they left all their passion and gusto for the project at home. The story however, is still a classic Christmas tale and is always watchable but there are much better versions than this. My advice to anyone thinking of taking their family to see this is, save yourself some money and buy Mickey's Christmas Carol on video and a bucket of popcorn and stay at home.
