1940, the Second World War started to push itself into Greece. When the Italian army invades the island of Cephallonia, the residents treat their captors with the resentment and distain they deserve. Non-more adamant in this treatment is Pelagia (Cruz), whose fiancé Mandras (Bale) is way fighting in Albania. Her opinion is soon changed, when she meets Captain Antonio Corelli (Cage), a character that has a passion for life and all the benefits that can be gained from it.

Based on the best selling novel by Louis de Bernieres, this is a wonderful film that captures a story of love behind a background of bloodshed and terror. Beautifully directed by Oscar winning director John Madden, the movie is superbly acted by the cast with Cruz and Cage sharing a very convincing screen chemistry and passion that is the heartbeat of the film. John Hurt is his usual charismatic self and David Morrissey is extremely impressive as German officer Captain Webber.

The invasion sequence is both compelling and brutal, giving the movie a more dramatic and poignant background as these events actually happened. The love story set against an extreme situation seems to be an on going trend, started with Titanic again with Pearl Harbour, but this movie does it very well and leaves you with a sense of understanding and heart warming to what these people went during those horrific times.
