Will Keane (Gere) is a brilliant restaurant owner and the toast of New York. Now in his early fifties, Will's life has never changed, he is still a womaniser who lives life to its fullest. This all changes when he meets the daughter of a lost childhood love, Charlotte (Ryder). He pursues and wins her, only to find there is something special about this young woman that he has never felt before. For the first time, Will starts to actually want to love, but he doesn't have much time as Charlotte has only a year to live.

Yes this movie is as depressing and dull as the synopsis sounds. Gere tries to bring something to this movie that just isn't there, a sense of compassion for his plight, but he just comes across as an insensitive bast*rd for most of the movie. Winona Ryder is her usual angelic self but is never really given anything of real substance to test her craft. What you are left with is a movie that can only offer some good cinematography and a dose of depression. Never has tragedy being less tragic.
