When Sir Hector dies in the middle of a jousting tournament, only needing one more ride to win, squire William Thatcher (Ledger) decides to take his place. Seeing this as a way of keeping himself and his fellow squires Roland (Addy) and Watt in a job, Will takes over the mantel of Knight and heads for the next tournament. Along the way they meet an out of work writer and forger, Chaucer (Bettany) who helps them with the documents needed to enter, all they need now is for Will to learn joust in the month before the next tournament.

This film is a welcome change from the glut of sequels and rehashes of old movies we have had to endure this summer. Mixing modern ideals and music into a medieval setting, the movie is just feel-good excitement, with a few laughs thrown in for good measure. Ledger is good in the lead role, but it is his support that hogs the limelight. Mark Addy and Paul Bettany as Roland and Chaucer have all the best lines to make the movie extremely enjoyable.

The only problem I had is with Rufus Sewell. Don’t get me wrong he is a very good actor, but the has a wandering eye and I can never take him seriously when he is trying to be menacing and one of his eyes isn’t even looking into camera. I’m sorry but it just makes me laugh.

That aside, this is a very good piece of family entertainment that will have you cheering for the good guy and booing the Dark Knight…with the wandering eye.
