Maurice Bendrix (Fiennes) is writing a diary, a diary about hate. This friend Henry Miles (Rea) thinks his wife Sarah (Moore) is having an affair, what complicates matters is that Bendrix had had an affair with her two years earlier. Driven by his love but powered by his overwhelming jealousy he hires a private detective (Hart) to find out who the man is.

Set in W.W.II, this emotionally charged film from director Neil Jordan, adapted from the book by Graham Greene, shows how jealousy, love and hate can weave a powerful web. Told in the narrative by Fiennes, it shows in flashback how the affair both started and ended and the repercussions that followed.

While the movie never really gets up to speed, the performances by the central characters are excellent, for which Julianne Moore gained an Oscar nomination. The end and overall message of the film are quite engaging and very moving, giving a sense of completeness few movies tend to manage.
