This is the story of Homer Wells (Maguire), a young man bought up in an orphanage by the resident doctor (Caine). Taught to be skilled surgeon by his mentor, he still has a longing to see the world, having never been away form the orphanage. When a young couple come to see the doctor, Homer sees this as his chance to get away.
John Irving adapts his own novel into an Oscar winning screenplay, in this heart warming movie about finding your place in the world, somewhere you can do some good. Michael Caine's Oscar winning performance as the doctor, who acts as a father figure to all the children, is one of his best, showing genuine emotion when his favorite surrogate son Homer leaves the home. The increasingly watch able Toby Maguire (The Ice Storm, Pleasantville and Ride with the Devil), shows he is becoming one of the worlds best young actors. Him and Charlize Theron ignite the screen with an innocent kind of love and friendship seldom seen on the big screen in recent years.
