After successfully defeating the barbarian armies of northern Germania, General Maximus (Crowe) wants to go home to his family after nearly 2 1/2 years of war. But when the dying emperor Marcus Aurelius (Harris) asks Maximus to be the new Caesar, instead of his own son Commodus (Phoenix), the young prince seeks vengeance by killing his father and condemning Maximus death. Maximus escapes with his life, only to find his home burnt to the ground and his wife and son dead. Almost dead, he is captured and taken into slavery in North Africa, where he is bought by Proximo (Reed) to become a Gladiator.

This is Ridley Scott back on an epic scale. As he did with both Alien and Blade Runner, he resurrects an old genre and injects new life into it with such passion and lustre you watch with your jaw hitting the floor for most of the movie. Recreating Rome in all its splendour, the stellar cast brings the story life with Crowe and especially Oliver Reed, in his last ever role, commanding the screen every time they graced it. It's an event and the big Oscar winning movie of 2000. Hail Maximus!!
